The Idea of Multifunctional Screen

Residence Design by PoCheng Chu, YaYi Tsai, and Wendy Laio

In response to intensive gathering in the client's home, the designers take a bold action in designing the living and dining room, creating a spacious place that makes everyone feel comfortable. The design showcases the hostess's personality in hospitality, generosity, and unrestraint through the use of leather and cloth couches, sharp log chairs, famous animal-style chairs, and furniture with diverse characters.

The "multifunctional screen" in this residence design is a unique feature that sets it apart from others. It serves as a porch, capable of storing numerous shoes, while also functioning as a TV wall that separates the indoor space into different areas. The mirror ceiling designed in the porch allows the mother to choose her shoes with ease. This innovative screen not only adds functionality but also adds a touch of elegance to the space.

The inspiration for this design came from the personality traits of the hostess, who has a youthful spirit and shares a passion for collecting stylish shoes with her daughter. The designers took these traits into consideration when planning the overall configuration, leading to the invention of the "multifunctional screen."

Measuring 235 square meters, this residence design showcases the creativity and ingenuity of the design team, consisting of PoCheng Chu, YaYi Tsai, and Wendy Laio. The "multifunctional screen" allows for the separation of spaces while maintaining privacy and inclusiveness. It creates a harmonious connection between different areas without interfering with each other.

The project was completed in December 2015 in Taichung City. Throughout the design process, the interaction between the client and the designers was joyful and pleasant, inspiring the designers to approach the project with an aggressive and flexible strategy. The challenges faced included creating a long corridor that connects the porch, dining room, living room, and main bedroom, while also incorporating a stunning wall painting that presents another concept of a "screen." This mechanism separates the public and private spaces within the same room, providing functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The residence design by PoCheng Chu, YaYi Tsai, and Wendy Laio has been recognized for its excellence and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The design contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.
